Real Madrid have officially announced the return of José Mourinho as head coach, marking the Portuguese manager’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu following the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa.

The Spanish giants confirmed in a statement on Thursday that Mourinho has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until June 30, 2029.

Mourinho, 63, returns to Madrid after spending the past season in charge of Benfica. The Portuguese club confirmed on Wednesday that Real Madrid agreed to pay a €15 million compensation fee to secure his release from his contract.

According to the club, Mourinho will officially begin his new role on July 13, when the team commences pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

A statement on Real Madrid’s official website read: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and chaired by Florentino Perez, has agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as first-team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.”

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, guiding the club to a LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey trophy and a Supercopa de España. During his first stint, he also led Los Blancos to three consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-final appearances.

His return is expected to usher in a new chapter for the club as they look to build on their recent successes and challenge for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
