Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has scaled down her official convoy and directed government officials to travel together in a single bus during official trips as part of efforts to conserve fuel amid ongoing shortages linked to tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, April 8, Hassan explained that only her essential convoy comprising her escort, police, and a backup vehicle—would accompany her on official engagements.

Her presidential convoy typically includes more than 30 vehicles, such as luxury SUVs and police outriders, often causing significant traffic disruptions.

“From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus, to cut fuel consumption,” she said.

The shortages have been worsened by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply usually passes, prompting several countries to adopt fuel rationing measures.
