The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 17-year-old girl identified as Wumi for allegedly fatally stabbing her foster mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi, aged 54.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The incident occurred at the residence of the deceased in Oda, Akure, last Wednesday, according to the PPRO.
Although the deceased’s family asserted that the suspect was grappling with mental health challenges, the command awaits medical confirmation of the claim.
“The suspect is currently in our custody, and we have commenced an investigation into the matter. However, the family informed us about the suspect’s mental health issue,” stated Odunlami.
“We are awaiting the medical report to validate this claim. The deceased, who worked at the Ondo State Ministry of Finance, had been caring for the suspect since her childhood as her foster mother.”
The decomposing body of the deceased was discovered at her residence last Sunday, three days after the tragic incident, according to reports. A neighbor disclosed that she had been stabbed in the abdominal area, with the doors deliberately shut to prevent any assistance.
The deceased’s remains were transported to a hospital morgue in Akure for further procedures
