Trump casts doubt on prospect of an Iran deal

Donald Trump on Thursday cast fresh doubt on the likelihood of reaching a deal with Iran, even as he claimed Tehran is willing to negotiate, amid the intensifying U.S.-Israel conflict.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump described Iran as a skilled negotiating party but questioned whether the United States is ready to strike an agreement at this time.

His comments come as tensions continue to escalate following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes launched in late February, which have triggered retaliatory attacks by Iran across the region, including drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. military assets. (Reuters)

The conflict has resulted in heavy casualties, with thousands reported dead and millions displaced across affected countries, particularly in Iran and Lebanon. U.S. forces have also suffered losses, while Washington is reportedly considering further troop deployments, raising concerns about a broader military escalation.

Global economic fears are also growing as Iran tightens its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for international energy supplies, disrupting shipping and adding pressure to already volatile markets. (The Washington Post)

Despite earlier indications that a ceasefire might be possible, Trump urged Iran to move swiftly toward serious negotiations, signaling frustration over stalled diplomacy and Tehran’s rejection of key proposals.

Meanwhile, Trump also hinted at rising tensions elsewhere, suggesting that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro could face additional legal action in the United States.
