
Two people have been confirmed dead, and 13 others are still missing following a head-on collision between two boats at Akede community in the Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to a source who spoke to Daily Trust, the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The collision involved a speedboat, carrying passengers from the Eropa community in Southern Ijaw, and a fishing boat.
The source added that rescue operations are underway, with divers currently searching the waters in hopes of locating any survivors.
The speedboat, named Meeting Marine, was powered by a 115HP engine and operated by an individual identified as Saturday. It was traveling from Anyama Ijaw toward the Lubia and Foropa communities when it collided with the fishing boat near the Akede Community waterfront.
Comrade Ogoniba Ipigansi, the Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, confirmed the incident and stated that 13 passengers are still missing. He further explained that communication issues in the area have hampered rescue efforts, as the network connectivity in the region is poor.
