The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos to vehicular traffic.
The directive was issued on Wednesday in response to the severe traffic gridlock that stretched from Lekki through Victoria Island to Falomo Bridge and beyond.
The bridge had been previously closed by the Federal Government for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works. However, the start of repairs on Tuesday led to significant traffic delays, with residents of Lagos spending hours on the road.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, confirmed the reopening on Wednesday evening. She apologized for the inconvenience caused to commuters and urged the public for their understanding and cooperation.
She also noted that efforts are underway to carry out palliative works on the reopened bridge to ensure it remains safe and motorable.
