Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has revealed that he found it impossible to refuse a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr during the January transfer window.
Boniface was close to finalizing a move to Al Nassr in the winter, but the club eventually chose to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa instead.
The Saudi side had offered the striker a staggering €15 million per year, a significant increase compared to the €2 million he currently earns at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.
“I’ve dealt with many injuries, and if I could play two or three more seasons, the money was just too good to pass up,” Boniface told The Culture League podcast.
“I agreed to the offer because it wasn’t just about me — the club was also involved. They were offered €70 million and were interested in the financial gain.
“In football, decisions aren’t only about the player but also about the club’s interests.
“I was ready to go, even packed my bags and gave away my designer clothes and shoes to friends. The plane was waiting.
“But in the end, it didn’t happen.”
