The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassigned its Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, amid increasing political tension ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The move follows a series of petitions accusing Agboke of bias, submitted to the INEC chairman, Joash Amupitan. Opposition parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), had demanded his removal in the lead-up to the August 15 election.

Despite the allegations, a group known as Osun Democrats for Democracy voiced confidence in INEC’s handling of electoral preparations, maintaining that the commission has remained impartial.

Agboke confirmed his redeployment, stating that he has been posted to Ondo State. In a message to journalists, he expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure in Osun.

“Good evening all. I have been transferred to Ondo State. I sincerely appreciate the support given to me throughout my time in Osun. May God Almighty bless you all,” he said.

The reassignment comes at a crucial period, as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the governorship election in Osun State.
