The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that the American International School Abuja (AISA) has reimbursed the fees previously paid by the former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, for his children’s education at the institution.

Initially reported by LIB, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, April 23, revealed that the former governor made an upfront payment of $760,910 from Kogi state government funds for the tuition of five of his children. Subsequently, the school assured to refund the fees to EFCC following the disclosure.

Responding to a letter addressed to the Lagos zonal commander of the EFCC, AISA confirmed that a total of $845,852 was received as tuition payments from September 7, 2021, up to the present. However, after deducting educational services already provided, the net amount to be refunded stands at $760,910.

AISA requested an official written request with the EFCC’s authentic banking details for the refund process to be initiated as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged money laundering activities involving the Bello family. The school assured that no additional fees are anticipated concerning tuition as the students’ fees have been settled until their graduation from AISA.

Confirming the reimbursement, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated to The Cable that the funds have been deposited into the public account.
