Premier League champions Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British-record transfer deal worth £125 million.
The landmark signing surpasses the previous record of £115m, paid by Chelsea to Brighton for Moisés Caicedo in 2023, and concludes one of the most high-profile and drawn-out sagas of this summer’s transfer window.
Isak completed his medical on Merseyside before putting pen to paper on a six-year contract believed to be worth £300,000 per week. The Swedish international will wear the iconic No. 9 shirt at Anfield.
With this deal, Liverpool’s summer spending now stands at £455.5 million, having brought in several high-profile signings. They have also generated £228 million from player sales, bringing their net spend to £218 million.
“It’s been a long journey to get here,” Isak said in his first interview as a Liverpool player. “But I’m super happy to be part of this team, this club, and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates, the fans, and getting back out there.”
The 25-year-old striker added: “I think I have a lot to give and a lot to improve. I’m a striker, but I always aim to contribute beyond just goals. I want to help the team however I can—and most of all, I want to win everything.”
From Newcastle to Anfield
Isak joined Newcastle United from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for £63 million, and quickly became a fan favorite at St. James’ Park. He scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Isak comes during a record-breaking transfer window, not just for the club but for English football. In addition to Isak, the Reds have also signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m, and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m.
