Godswill Akpabio has reiterated the Senate’s backing for the proposed creation of Anioma State, emphasizing that the plan remains a key priority under the administration of Bola Tinubu.

He made this known while speaking to members of the All Progressives Congress during the party’s South-South zonal congress in Asaba.

According to Akpabio, Anioma State will be established with Asaba as its capital, noting that the Senate fully supports the initiative led by Ned Nwoko. He also explained that Warri is being considered as the capital of the remaining Delta State due to its existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, and a strong oil industry presence.

Akpabio said the move would open a new chapter of development and shared prosperity for the people of the region. The proposal, championed by Nwoko, is currently gaining momentum in the 10th Senate as part of wider constitutional amendment discussions.

He described the demand for Anioma State as long-standing and justified, rooted in the need for fairness, administrative efficiency, and balanced regional development. He added that dividing Delta State into two viable entities would enhance decentralisation and stimulate socio-economic growth.

Akpabio further called for unity across the South-South region and urged stakeholders to align with the government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which he said is aimed at driving national development and integration. Nwoko had earlier noted that the proposal has attracted significant backing from senators, describing the level of support as unprecedented.
