The Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered the remand of a businessman, Mamuda Duma, over allegations of engaging in an extramarital affair with a married woman and influencing the termination of a three-month pregnancy.
The remand order followed a direct criminal complaint filed by the woman’s husband, Ahmadu Lawal, who resides in Yola South Local Government Area.
In his complaint, Lawal claimed that Duma, a resident of Wurojabbe, had been involved in an ongoing affair with his wife. He told the court that he discovered the alleged relationship in August 2024 and had made repeated phone calls—three in total—warning Duma to stay away from his wife, which he claimed were ignored.
Lawal further alleged that the defendant persuaded his wife to terminate her three-month pregnancy, an action which she later carried out. He said he initially reported the matter to the police headquarters in Yola and later agreed to withdraw the complaint after the defendant and some associates pleaded for reconciliation and promised to end all contact with his wife.
However, Lawal told the court that Duma continued to call his wife despite the earlier resolution, and that he had recorded conversations between them as evidence.
The complainant said the alleged actions amount to “enticing and abortion,” offenses which he claimed are in violation of Sections 315 and 203 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018.
When the charges were read in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty. He was represented by counsel H. I. Ibrahim, while the complainant was represented by Ibrahim Hamman Gurin.
Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda ordered Duma’s remand in prison custody and adjourned the case to September 1, 2025, for commencement of trial.
