Eight people lost their lives after a vehicle they were traveling in struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred in Borgu Local Government Area on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Sources revealed that the vehicle, which was heading between Nuku and Woro, ran over the explosive device. The blast killed all seven passengers along with the driver.
It was further gathered that the IED had been planted by suspected terrorists, who had earlier used a similar device to destroy a bridge along Luma Road, linking the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities.
The damaged bridge serves as a key route for residents traveling between the towns, particularly those heading to the Babana border market, which holds every Monday.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said security operatives had launched a clearance operation in the area.
“On March 23, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., a report indicated that earlier that same day around 2:00 a.m., suspected terrorists operating within the forest used an explosive device to bomb a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities,” he said.
He added that the bridge was damaged during the attack, noting that monitoring efforts are ongoing while security agencies intensify clearance operations in the area.
