The traditional ruler of Owa-Onire in Kwara State, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi, has fled his palace and is now living in a remote area on the outskirts of Ilorin due to ongoing security threats in his community.

The monarch, who currently resides several hours away from his domain, said he abandoned the palace after repeated attacks by armed groups, including a raid on December 31, 2025.

Recounting the incident, he said eight armed men forced their way into the palace, breaking gates and doors before seizing his phone, that of his wife, and some cash at gunpoint. Although they did not abduct him, the attackers reportedly took two palace aides.

Oba Fabiyi also revealed that he had been kidnapped about a year earlier and held for seven days before being released after a ₦5 million ransom was paid by members of the community. He suggested that this previous abduction may have influenced the attackers’ decision not to take him during the latest raid.

The traditional ruler said he will not return to Owa-Onire without improved security, stressing that the community lacks even basic protection such as a police station or formal security presence, making it highly vulnerable.

He further highlighted the absence of forest guards and the limited capacity of local vigilante groups to counter attacks, urging the government to intervene while pledging that residents would support official efforts.

Oba Fabiyi noted that insecurity has displaced other traditional rulers in nearby communities, including Owa Kajola, OkeOyin, and Ofaro, with many now avoiding permanent residence in their domains.

Despite his displacement, he said he continues to carry out his traditional responsibilities remotely, resolving disputes and addressing community matters through regular communication, while residents increasingly split their time between Owa-Onire and safer neighbouring areas.
