The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a ₦5 million fine on Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) following an attack on the Ikorodu City entourage at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. The incident occurred after the teams’ goalless draw in the Southwest derby on Sunday.
Players and officials of Ikorodu City were forced to leave the stadium under the protection of Nigerian Army personnel, as irate 3SC supporters held them hostage. According to Samuel Bamisebi, Ikorodu City’s Director of Media and Communications, the visiting team was locked inside the stadium to shield them from the angry fans outside.
Additionally, some 3SC fans vandalized one of the buses used to transport Ikorodu City’s supporters from Lagos to the match.
In response to the incident, the NPFL issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming that 3SC was found guilty of three charges: failure to provide adequate security, failure to control their supporters which led to the attack, and throwing objects onto the pitch. The league body imposed a ₦1 million fine for each of the three charges and an additional ₦2 million to cover the damage to Ikorodu City’s bus.
The NPFL also announced the closure of the Lekan Salami Stadium to fans for the remainder of the season as part of the disciplinary action.
