The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has strongly criticized the role of social media in Nigeria, describing it as a “terrorist organisation” that must be urgently addressed to safeguard national security.
Speaking on Tuesday at the 17th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Sultan expressed concern over the unchecked spread of misinformation and the growing influence of social media in fueling unrest across the country.
“What has happened has happened, but it shouldn’t be spread through social media. That platform has become a kind of terrorist organisation,” he stated.
He went on to criticize individuals who, from the comfort of their homes, create and circulate false narratives, leading to widespread confusion and tension.
“Someone sits comfortably and fabricates stories, and people believe them to be true. Social media is now a terrorist organisation that we must confront. Security agencies must take this threat seriously and take action,” the Sultan urged.
