
Police in Anambra State have recovered a fabricated AK-47 rifle and an empty magazine abandoned in an apartment at Umuike Village, Awka, following a late-night operation by the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.
State police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed on Friday that the weapon was left behind by a suspect who escaped through the back door when officers arrived.
The recovery is linked to an ongoing investigation into the murder of two men at Okochi Village, Okpuno, in Awka South. The prime suspect, identified as Nwajagu (other names unknown), was traced to the Awka apartment but managed to flee before being apprehended.
In a formal statement, Ikenga said: “On August 14, 2025, police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, recovered an abandoned fabricated AK-47 rifle and one magazine without ammunition in an apartment at Umuike Village, Awka.”
“This operation is part of ongoing investigations into conspiracy, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms related to the brutal killing of two men at Okochi Village, Okpuno, Awka South LGA.”
“The principal suspect, Nwajagu, has been on the run since the incident and was located at the Awka apartment. Upon seeing the operatives, he escaped through the back door.”
“The Command assures the public that efforts are being intensified to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice. Meanwhile, the recovered firearm has been secured as evidence.”
