President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the South-West and South-South Development Commission bills into law, completing the establishment of development commissions across all six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, March 26, during a plenary session by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who highlighted the importance of these commissions in ensuring that the benefits of governance reach local communities.
“No effort is too great when it comes to delivering development and democracy to the grassroots,” Kalu stated. “With the establishment of these development commissions, the impact of this administration will be directly felt at the grassroots level.”
The commissions are tasked with facilitating infrastructure projects and economic initiatives tailored to the specific needs of each region. With this latest signing, every geo-political zone in Nigeria now has a dedicated commission to oversee regional development efforts.
Earlier, in July 2024, Tinubu signed the South-East and North-West Development Commission bills into law, further reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to advancing regional development. These commissions will be provided with funding to implement projects aimed at enhancing the economic and social conditions in their respective zones.
