Trump Sets 10 to 12-Day Deadline for Russia to End Ukraine Conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new ultimatum, giving Russia “10 to 12 days” to halt its war in Ukraine or risk facing harsher sanctions and tariffs from the United States.

Speaking on July 28 during a meeting in Scotland with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reluctance to de-escalate the conflict. “I’m going to set a new deadline of about ten or twelve days from today. There’s no reason to wait any longer,” he said.

Trump indicated he would officially announce the shortened timeline by July 29, significantly cutting down the original 50-day deadline he had set on July 14, which was due to expire on September 2.

“I want to be generous, but we just aren’t seeing any progress,” Trump added. “If there’s no movement, there will be sanctions—and possibly secondary tariffs.”

He warned that the U.S. would not only target Russia but also impose penalties on countries that continue to do business with Moscow.

“He has to come to an agreement,” Trump said. “Too many people are dying. This is a very bloody war.”

At the start of his second term, Trump had placed blame on both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, his recent statements have focused criticism primarily on Putin.

Trump accused the Russian leader of feigning willingness to negotiate peace privately while continuing missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

“Common sense says he should want to make a deal,” Trump remarked. “We’ll see what happens.”
