As global concern intensifies over the deepening crisis in the Middle East, world powers have issued sharply divergent responses to the United States’ recent airstrikes on Iran.
On Sunday, June 22, U.S. warplanes targeted three of Iran’s nuclear facilities—Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow—under direct orders from President Donald Trump. The strikes mark a major escalation in U.S. involvement in the region and have drawn swift and contrasting reactions from international leaders.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the U.S. action, describing Iran’s nuclear ambitions as “a grave threat to international security.” He urged Tehran to return to the negotiating table, a sentiment echoed by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who called on Iran “to show restraint.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also underscored the need for diplomacy. “Stability must be the priority, and respect for international law is critical,” she said. “Now is the moment for Iran to engage in a credible diplomatic solution. The negotiating table is the only place to end this crisis.”
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba similarly called for de-escalation while warning against Iran’s continued nuclear weapons development. “De-escalation is vital,” he said, “but Iran’s nuclear weapons program must also be stopped.”
In sharp contrast, China and Russia condemned the U.S. strikes. China’s foreign ministry called the attacks “a serious violation” of the UN Charter and international law, warning they would only worsen regional instability. “The United States has exacerbated tensions in the Middle East,” the ministry stated, urging all sides—particularly Israel—to agree to a ceasefire, protect civilians, and resume dialogue.
Russia echoed Beijing’s position, calling the strikes “an irresponsible decision” and “a flagrant violation of international law.” The Russian foreign ministry demanded an immediate end to military aggression and called for renewed diplomatic engagement to resolve the crisis.
The U.S. strikes followed a cycle of retaliatory attacks between Iran and Israel. Tehran had previously warned that any American intervention would have long-term consequences. As tensions continue to rise, the international community remains deeply divided on the best path toward de-escalation and peace.
