Veteran Nollywood actor Femi Branch didn’t hold back during his recent appearance on Trending, igniting a heated discussion about professionalism in the Nigerian acting industry.
In the viral clip, Branch called out actors who fail to transform physically and emotionally for their roles, appearing the same in every film.
“You have someone who calls himself an actor and has just one look in every film,” he remarked. “I’m sorry, dude, you’re not a professional. You’re a fraud.”
He argued that these actors are cheating their audience by forcing viewers to mentally disconnect from the actor’s real persona to stay immersed in the character. “The audience has to keep convincing themselves that it’s not you—they’re doing your job for you. You’re giving them stress!” he added.
Branch further emphasized the importance of physical transformation for a role, referencing Hollywood stars like Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, and rapper 50 Cent, who underwent drastic physical changes for their roles. Fassbender, for instance, lost over 60 pounds and later bulked up in just a month, while Phoenix became almost unrecognizable as the Joker.
“If you have to go bald, you go bald. If you have to wear warts on your face, you wear warts! Your body doesn’t belong to you—it belongs to the craft,” Branch said.
He also criticized lazy actors, claiming they were the reason they were excluded from serious productions. “That’s why you’ll never see such actors in serious projects. Producers and directors know how to sift the wheat from the chaff.”
In an industry where fame sometimes overshadows skill, Branch’s remarks serve as a reminder that true professionalism demands transformation, dedication, and depth. If you want to be taken seriously as an actor, it’s not enough to just show up—you have to become the role.
And for those who prioritize appearance over craft?
“Who cares about your good looks? People are paying for characters they can relate to—not your selfies.”
