Gunmen, believed to be kidnappers, have killed a 46-year-old health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, in Ondo State.

Oyabiyi, a father of four, was shot dead near Akure Airport at Eleyowo in the Akure North Local Government Area on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

A family member, who spoke anonymously, told reporters on Friday that Oyabiyi was returning home when the attackers opened fire on him.

The source suspects that Oyabiyi may have tried to escape an abduction attempt when he was shot at close range.

“The incident occurred around 8 pm on Tuesday while he was heading home. The assailants attacked him, possibly attempting to kidnap him,” the source said. “He was shot in the abdomen and died shortly after. We were told the gunmen emerged from the bush and shot him while he was in his car.”

Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident, assuring that the police are investigating the matter.

The deceased’s body has been taken to a hospital morgue.
