United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged increased investment in green energy across Africa, highlighting the continent’s vast potential to become a “renewable superpower.”
Speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Guterres emphasized the importance of mobilizing finance and technology to ensure Africa’s natural resources benefit its people and support the growth of a robust renewable energy and manufacturing sector.
“Green power in Africa lowers energy costs, diversifies supply chains, and accelerates decarbonization for everyone,” he stated.
Guterres also cautioned that rising debt levels must not obstruct development progress. He called for more concessional financing and expanded lending capacity from multilateral development banks.
“Africa has everything it takes to become a renewable superpower—from solar and wind to the critical minerals needed to power modern technologies,” he added.
The conference brought together African leaders and Japanese officials to discuss clean energy, economic cooperation, and sustainable investment opportunities across the continent.
