Former FBI Director James Comey Denies Wrongdoing, Responds to Trump’s Indictment Accusations

Former FBI Director James Comey has vowed to vigorously contest federal criminal charges filed against him, firmly maintaining his innocence while accusing President Donald Trump of political retaliation.

In a calm yet resolute video posted on Instagram Thursday evening, just hours after a grand jury indicted him, Comey said:

“My family and I have known for years there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump. But we couldn’t live any other way. We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn’t either.”
“My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system. And I’m innocent. So let’s have a trial.”

Comey is the first FBI director in U.S. history to face federal criminal charges. The indictment, returned by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia, includes two counts: making a false statement and obstructing a congressional proceeding. These charges stem from testimony he gave to the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 30, 2020.

Prosecutors claim Comey lied when denying he authorized an FBI official to act as an anonymous media source, and allege his testimony obstructed Congress. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

The indictment comes amid significant turmoil at the Justice Department following pressure from Trump. Last week, Erik S. Siebert, acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned after Trump demanded his removal. Siebert, who oversaw politically sensitive investigations, never filed charges against Comey. Trump swiftly appointed Lindsey Halligan, a former defense lawyer of his, as Siebert’s replacement.

Trump, meanwhile, renewed calls for prosecution of his political rivals, accusing Attorney General Pam Bondi of inaction and demanding justice.

“They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!) over nothing,” Trump tweeted. “Justice must be served, now!!”

Legal experts have expressed surprise at the indictment, noting that previous prosecutors found insufficient evidence to move forward. The case further escalates the longstanding feud between Trump and Comey, dating back to the 2016 FBI investigation into Russian interference in Trump’s campaign, which culminated in Trump’s firing of Comey in 2017 and the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Comey framed the indictment as a broader challenge to institutional independence, saying,

“Let’s have a trial.”

While Trump supporters view the charges as justified, many critics argue the case exemplifies the politicization of the Justice Department. Regardless, the indictment places Comey once again at the center of a contentious legal and political battle—pitting a former president against the man who once investigated him, with the integrity of the American justice system on the line.
