The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Yelwata community in Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed. He described the massacre as a senseless act of terror—not only against Benue State but against the sovereignty and integrity of Nigeria.

Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected area, the IGP expressed deep concern over the continued violence in the region. He pledged to enhance collaboration with other security agencies to restore lasting peace to Benue State.

“The activities of these bandits, who operate with impunity, will soon be brought to an end,” Egbetokun declared. “The day is fast approaching when they will come but never return.”

He extended condolences on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force to the government and people of Benue, particularly the bereaved families. “I am here to commiserate with the people of Benue and to assure them that they are not alone,” he said.

The IGP also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s deep sorrow over the renewed attacks on vulnerable communities, affirming the President’s commitment to ending the reign of terror and impunity not only in Benue but across Nigeria.

Egbetokun acknowledged the unique security challenges facing the state, especially in its border communities, and promised to deploy adequate police personnel and resources. He assured that the Police Force, in coordination with other security agencies, would prioritize the protection of lives and property in the state.

In response, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, IGP Egbetokun, and the police leadership for their swift response. However, he lamented the ongoing pain and suffering in the state.

“We are bleeding. We are in sorrow. We are no longer sleeping,” the governor said. “But seeing you here today has lifted our spirits and renewed our hope for peace in our communities.”

Governor Alia emphasized that the IGP’s visit and commitment would rekindle confidence among the people and reinforce their belief that the government stands with them in their fight against terror.

He also highlighted the history of insecurity in Benue, noting that while violent attacks had once spread across 17 local government areas, efforts by his administration had reduced the affected areas to nine, and then to six. However, he admitted that recent months had seen a disturbing resurgence in violence.

“With the directives of the President and renewed support from security agencies, we are confident that this dark chapter will soon end, and our people will once again know peace,” Alia concluded.
