Police Nearing Conclusion on Cause of Crash That Killed Diogo Jota

Authorities are nearing a conclusion in the investigation into the tragic car crash that killed Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva. A formal update from investigators is expected in the coming days.

Spain’s Guardia Civil, along with traffic officials in Zamora, are analyzing data to determine the speed of the brothers’ £180,000 acid-green Lamborghini Huracán when it veered off the A-52 motorway early Thursday morning. Investigators are also working to confirm which of the two was driving at the time of the accident.

Preliminary findings suggest the supercar, which can reach speeds of up to 200 mph, may have suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle near Cernadilla, about 10 miles from the Portuguese border. Photos from the scene show the mangled front of the car beside the roadside.

Alfonso Ibáñez, Zamora’s provincial head of traffic, is compiling data from the crash site—a notoriously hazardous stretch of road where six fatalities have already occurred this year. Officials are evaluating the road’s condition, including surface quality, layout, and barrier integrity. Local sources have described the A-52 as particularly dangerous due to potholes, damaged lanes, recent construction, and wildlife activity. Just one day before the crash, a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured in a separate incident on the same route.

The Jota brothers were reportedly en route to Santander to board a ferry to the UK, part of a road trip through northern Spain. According to Portuguese media, Diogo had recently undergone lung surgery and had been advised not to fly. The 27-year-old had just returned from marrying his longtime partner, Rute, in Porto on June 22.

André Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, died at the scene alongside his brother. The siblings were buried in Porto on Saturday.

Investigators are focusing on calculating the car’s speed at the time of the crash, determining what caused the tyre to fail, and identifying any contributing factors. Authorities believe the vehicle attempted to pass another car before sharply veering into a crash barrier.

The incident has shocked football fans worldwide and left the Jota family and the wider football community in mourning. Several key questions remain as the investigation nears its conclusion.
