Rivers Assembly says court cannot intervene in impeachment proceedings.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected a High Court order that temporarily halted the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The court had on Friday granted an interim injunction restraining Speaker Martin Amaewhule and the Clerk of the House from sending any correspondence to the Chief Judge of Rivers State to advance the impeachment. It also barred Chief Judge Justice Simeon Amadi from constituting an investigative panel or taking any action on the process pending further hearing.

Addressing journalists, Rivers Assembly spokesman Enemi George said the court lacked the authority to interfere in the matter. He added that the Assembly was not aware of any such order and insisted that the impeachment proceedings would continue unaffected.

“The House is not aware of any court order. However, if you read section 188(10), the court has no power to intervene in the impeachment process,” George said, stressing that the Constitution does not allow judicial interference in a governor’s impeachment.
