The Super Eagles of Nigeria and their officials have boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, over unresolved disputes concerning unpaid allowances and bonuses.
The team was scheduled to hold a training session today in preparation for Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon but collectively chose to sit out the session.
Veteran BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji reported that the entire squad, including the coaching and support staff, refused to train on Tuesday, citing long-standing financial disagreements with football authorities.
In a brief statement reportedly issued jointly by the players and officials, the team confirmed the situation, saying:
“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco due to unresolved issues regarding outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a swift resolution to resume preparations for Thursday’s game against Gabon.”
The boycott comes just two days before Nigeria faces Gabon in the first semi-final of the World Cup Africa Playoff Tournament at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
A victory in that match would see the Super Eagles advance to the final playoff, where they would face either Cameroon or DR Congo.
