Tinubu’s Absence Shows Peace Pact Not A ‘Serious Affair’ — Sowore

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for failing to attend the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The peace accord was signed in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, with several presidential candidates, including Sowore, Peter Obi and Donald Duke, in attendance.

Speaking with Channels Television on Wednesday, Sowore said Tinubu’s absence suggested that the President did not consider the peace accord a serious commitment.

Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Sowore argued that Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, should have personally attended the event to demonstrate his commitment to preventing electoral violence.

He said the President’s absence undermined the moral significance of the agreement, insisting that any commitment to non-violence should begin with the country’s leader.

“If you are serious with non-violence, it should start with the Head of State, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. It will give moral support to whatever was being done yesterday,” Sowore said.

He added that Tinubu’s personal presence would have strengthened the credibility of the accord and demonstrated the government’s commitment to upholding its principles.
