Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, of attempting to disrupt the 2023 election through his policy to redesign the Naira.
During the screening of the nominee for the position of CBN governor, Olayemi Cardoso, and four deputy governor nominees for the apex bank, Akpabio raised concerns about political interference by asking Cardoso if he would engage in politics like his predecessor.
Akpabio stated:
“Adams Oshiomhole, thank you for the insights. I resonate with your sentiments, and since you didn’t pose any questions, I’d like to ask one on your behalf.
“Mr. CBN Governor, will you uphold integrity and steadfastness? Will you resist when politicians approach you to participate in the presidential race and display your campaign posters, even while serving as the CBN Governor during political conventions?
“Will you rush to showcase your profile electronically at political gatherings because politicians have informed you that the CBN holds ample funds for such endeavors?
“Don’t forget that the funds in the central bank do not belong to you. Will you possess the courage to resist the allure of listening to politicians, refrain from entering the political arena, and continue your role as CBN governor?
“Will you avoid hastening to introduce new currency notes just two days before the election, considering that no country in the world changes its currency within one year, while you plan to do so within 14 or 11 days, potentially jeopardizing the Nigerian election?”
