Armed bandits attacked the students’ quarters of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic (BUPOLY) in Hadejia, Jigawa State, on Thursday night, September 25, 2025. The hostel, located along Malam Madori Road, was stormed by the assailants around midnight.
During the invasion, several students were assaulted, and numerous mobile phones were stolen. The attackers also attempted to abduct some students but were thwarted by the victims’ loud cries for help, which drew the attention of nearby residents.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, told Punch:
“It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”
Another eyewitness, Tukur Danlami, added:
“If not for the loud shouts and screams of the students, we wouldn’t have known what happened. Neighbours from nearby communities rushed to help, forcing the attackers to flee.”
Two BUPOLY students who spoke in separate interviews on Friday recounted the terrifying experience.
“They entered our dormitory with weapons, attacked us, and stole several phones without warning. Thankfully, we escaped unharmed,” said Yunusa Yaro.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the attack occurred at an off-campus male hostel rented by students, which was vulnerable due to its isolated location.
He stated that officers from a nearby police post responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
“From our records, two students were seriously injured during the attack. They were taken to the Hadejia General Hospital and have since been discharged,” Adam said.
He assured the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects. Security has also been reinforced around the polytechnic and surrounding areas to prevent future occurrences.
