Donald Trump Announces Temporary 10% Global Tariff Following Supreme Court Ruling

Donald Trump on Friday announced a temporary 10% global tariff that will remain in effect for 150 days, replacing emergency trade duties recently invalidated by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Trump said the new tariff would be imposed under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 and would apply on top of existing duties. The provision permits a president to levy tariffs of up to 15% for 150 days to address serious balance-of-payments issues, without undergoing lengthy investigations or procedural requirements.

The announcement follows the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down Trump’s broad global tariffs enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, with the justices finding that he had overstepped his authority under that law.

Speaking at a White House briefing alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Solicitor General D. John Sauer, Trump expressed confidence in alternative legal options. “We have alternatives, great alternatives,” he said. “We’ll take in more money and we’ll be a lot stronger for it.”

The president also revealed plans to initiate several Section 301 investigations into what he described as unfair trade practices by foreign governments and corporations. However, such probes typically take months to complete, while tariffs imposed under Section 122 authority are limited to a 150-day duration.

The move represents the administration’s latest attempt to sustain its assertive trade agenda following the high court’s decision.
