The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in collaboration with enforcement partners, has successfully prosecuted eight individuals for illegally dumping waste along Ejigbo Road.
The offenders were apprehended on June 28, 2025, following actionable intelligence and repeated reports from the local community. They were arraigned before the Special Offences Court in Bolade, Oshodi, where judgment was delivered on Tuesday, July 1.
Four of the defendants were each fined ₦20,000, with the option of performing community service. The remaining four, charged under a three-count indictment, were fined ₦75,000 each or given the option of custodial sentences.
Out of the original 11 suspects arrested, two minors were released after undergoing counseling, and one adult was discharged on compassionate grounds with the magistrate’s approval. The remaining eight were convicted based on evidence of clear violations of environmental sanitation laws.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for environmental offenses, stressing that prosecution and sentencing serve as strong deterrents.
“This is a clear signal that Lagos will no longer tolerate habitual abuse of the environment,” he stated. “Illegal dumping will lead to arrest, trial, fines, community service, or even imprisonment. We are committed to a cleaner city and will hold offenders accountable.”
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that enforcement efforts are being intensified, particularly in fast-developing residential areas vulnerable to sanitation infractions due to urban growth. He also urged residents to avoid using unlicensed waste handlers and to promptly report violations.
LAWMA, he said, remains committed to working with communities and stakeholders to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
