Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday, July 2, 2025.
In a statement explaining his decision, Malami emphasized that his move was motivated by a deep love for Nigeria and concern for the country’s current challenges—not anger or personal ambition.
“My fellow Nigerians and the good people of Kebbi State, after extensive consultations and reflection, I announce my resignation from the APC and my alignment with the ADC — the party leading a coalition aimed at rescuing our nation from decline,” Malami said.
He described Nigeria’s dire situation: escalating insecurity marked by banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism, especially in the North; a failing economy with soaring food prices and rising unemployment; and governance driven by political loyalty rather than national interest.
“I cannot remain part of a system that watches silently as Nigerians suffer and die,” he stated.
Malami praised the ADC for its commitment to justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal, expressing hope that the coalition would offer a new path forward.
“To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. This move is to amplify your voice and restore hope. To all Nigerians, I urge you to join this movement. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he concluded.
